The ballet company of the Staatstheater Nürnberg is now in its seventeenth season under the direction of its ballet director and chief choreographer Goyo Montero. The company has long been known far beyond the borders of Franconia and numbers among the premier league in the international ballet scene. Alongside Goyo Montero, world-class choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, Johan Inger, Mauro Bigonzetti, Crystal Pite, Douglas Lee, Cayetano Soto, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Christian Spuck, Alexander Ekman, Hofesh Shechter, Marco Goecke, Sol León & Paul Lightfoot and Jean-Christophe Maillot create new , breathtaking choreographies and dance pieces with the company. The many sold-out performances at the Staatstheater Nürnberg and the growing number of invitations to national and international dance festivals are testimony to this. Successful tours have taken the company to Moscow, Biarritz and Lausanne, and many other places.
When establishing the company, Goyo Montero's aim was to create a soloist ensemble. Although all company members contribute different personalities and each has their own background, Montero's dancers work with dedication as a team. They all have excellent fundamental classical training as well as extensive experience in contemporary dance techniques. As most of Goyo Montero's works are based on the unfolding of a story, his dancers share an interest and talent in the dramatic creation of a role. To date, nine of the 24 dancers have received the Bayerischer Kunstförderpreis in recognition of their achievements and two members of the ensemble have been nominated for the FAUST Theater Prize. In 2009, the company and Goyo Montero were awarded the IHK Kulturpreis der Mittelfränkischen Wirtschaft. In 2018, the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballett under the direction of Goyo Montero received the Deutscher Tanzpreis Aktuell for “outstanding development in dance”.
