Macbeth
A dance piece based on William Shakespeare, by Tarek Assam
Live music by the Johannes Wasikowski Jazz Quartet
“Macbeth” is one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays, yet it is packed with action and drama. After a victorious battle, the tragic hero receives a prophecy that points to an opportunity for power. From then on, all rules are suspended, and the impossible becomes possible. The play’s atmosphere is steeped in darkness, and the anarchic emergence of new plot developments leads into the abyss. What the witches predict at the beginning turns out, in the end, to be a deceptive illusion that destroys everything. Shakespeare’s arguably bloodiest royal drama—atmospherically staged through the visual imagination of contemporary dance. A live jazz-fusion ensemble provides the musical undercurrent for the subtly analytical choreography.
