Archive Platform Digital Atlas Dance

The German Dance Archives preserve a great treasure, around one million documents on dance history, not only manuscripts, letters and reviews, but also photos, costumes, films or videos.

This cultural heritage must be preserved and made visible for future generations, even beyond national borders. Five dance archives - Akademie der Künste Berlin, Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln, Deutsches Tanzfilminstitut Bremen, Mime Centrum Berlin and Tanzarchiv Leipzig - have been working together in the Association of German Dance Archives (VdT) since 2007.

Together, they are working on a presentation of their collections on the Internet - the Digital Atlas of Dance - which means, first and foremost, finding solutions to the enormous legal, technological and factual difficulties involved.

The digitization and online presence of the materials should provide answers to artistic and scientific questions, but also bring the diversity of dance closer to a broad public, as is already happening in some neighboring European countries (especially France, Belgium and England).

In 2018, the German Dance Association took over the Digital Atlas of Dance from the Akademie der Künste. The Digital Atlas of Dance is currently being relaunched. As soon as the relaunch takes place, we will inform you.
